Tips on how to take care of the scar from scoliosis surgery

Updated: Apr 14

I receive many messages on Instagram from people who have recently undergone surgery or are about to undergo surgery for scoliosis. In light of this, I thought it would be nice to create a blog post with tips on taking care of the scar from scoliosis surgery, as this is an important part of the process, right? In the end, we all want a beautiful and healthy scar! To bring good tips here, I relied on many of you who wrote to me, sharing the medical recommendations regarding the main care for the scar. Thank you, everyone!

Shall we go to the tips? Oh, it's important to remember that each case is unique, and the most important thing is to follow what your doctor advises, okay!?

Keep the area clean and dry

Something widely discussed at the last Scoliosis Symposium at AACD, where I was present, was the importance of taking excellent care of post-operative wounds to prevent infection. We had an excellent lecture from one of the nurses at the AACD Orthopedic Hospital, and the main topic was this. One of the tips is to gently wash the scar area with warm water and mild soap, or Protex, avoiding rubbing the region. Dry it gently with a clean towel, without rubbing.

Avoid sun exposure

Protect the scar from direct sunlight, especially during the first few months after surgery, by wearing clothing that covers the area or using sunscreen recommended by the doctor. A follower wrote to me about this: "If I'm going to expose the scar to the sun, I use a lot of sunscreen on it and reapply several times. My scar is looking beautiful."

Clara Trindade, who also underwent scoliosis surgery, commented to me: "I only took sun after 6 months and with a lot of sunscreen, avoiding direct sun. Laser also helped a lot. My scar is perfect, by the way. Oh, and at first, I used a bandage to move my scapula less and consequently the scar."

Hydrate the skin

Some doctors recommend the use of ointments, such as Cicatricure or Sunflower Oil, to moisturize the scar. I received the following message about this: "I had surgery 4 months ago, and only now did the doctor recommend using an ointment. So far, I have taken very good care of my hygiene... didn't take the sun and used a lot of Sunflower Oil to moisturize. It's looking pretty good. Lightening 😊"

Use Micropore tape on the area

In my time, in 2000, I didn't have this recommendation, but I noticed that today, this is more common. See the tips I received about it:

"My 13-year-old daughter had surgery and after 15 days she removed the stitches, which were already well closed and dry. The doctor asked to dry the scar well after bathing and put a thin Micropore tape on it."

"They asked me to use Micropore tape and keep the area clean."

"My doctor advised me to keep the Micropore tape on the scar, clean it with alcohol, and change the dressing every two days. He told me that keeping the tape makes the scar look better."

Avoid itching and irritation

Avoid scratching or rubbing the scar, as this can increase irritation. Wear soft and loose clothing, as it can help prevent friction.

Massage

When authorized by the doctor, gentle massage on the scar can help reduce stiffness and improve flexibility.

Recommended Exercises

Your doctor may recommend specific exercises to aid in recovery and prevent the formation of excessive tissue.

Avoid Strain

In the early stages of the process, avoid lifting heavy objects or engaging in activities that may put pressure on the scar area.

Follow the Doctor's Instructions for Caring for the Scoliosis Surgery Scar

Strictly follow all instructions given by your surgeon regarding scar care and the follow-up schedule, and maintain regular medical appointments to stay on track.

Remember that each person may have specific needs, and the guidelines may vary depending on the type of surgery performed. Therefore, it is crucial to follow the doctor's recommendations to ensure proper recovery. If you have any doubts or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the medical team responsible for your post-surgical care.
