Mild Scoliosis: learn how to treat It

Mild scoliosis is considered when the curves measure up to 20 degrees by the Cobb angle, the primary reference on X-rays used by doctors to measure and assess the stage of the deformity. There are various levels of scoliosis, from mild to severe (when the curve exceeds 40 degrees). However, today we will focus on discussing mild scoliosis, as many individuals discover scoliosis at this stage and are unsure about what to do.

For children, teenagers, or adults, regardless of age, when less severe scoliosis is diagnosed, it is essential to monitor the curve's progression and improve muscle strength, posture, and the patient's quality of life. Let's understand what needs to be done to make this happen as effectively as possible.

Medical follow-up - mild scoliosis

The most important thing at this stage is to visit your orthopedic doctor regularly: every 6 months is recommended. This is because they will request imaging tests to assess the progression or not of the curve and also perform a clinical evaluation. My 13-year-old son, for example, undergoes regular monitoring because he has a 9-degree curve, and a mother with a history of severe scoliosis.

Physical Therapy

It has already been proven by studies and publications in the healthcare field that physical therapy plays a very important role in the conservative (non-surgical) treatment of scoliosis. Someone with mild scoliosis should seek a good specialized physical therapist to start the correct exercises for their case because everything should be treated individually since each situation is unique. Physical therapy will help strengthen the muscles, alleviate possible pains or discomforts, and improve posture.

Orthopedic brace

The recommendation for an orthopedic brace is rare for curves less than 20 degrees, but it can happen, especially if the patient is an adolescent in a growth spurt phase. Everything depends on the medical evaluation and how much the brace can help stabilize the curve in a particular case.

Psychological support

The self-esteem of a person with scoliosis is usually greatly affected, especially in children and adolescents. This point is very important and needs attention, so therapy with a good professional in the field of psychology is highly recommended, even for cases of mild scoliosis. Emotional aspects should not be minimized in any way, and this psychological support makes all the difference. Invest in it!

Never forget that scoliosis must be treated individually because it can vary depending on age, symptoms, and the severity of the curve.
