Four Tips to Manage Scoliosis in Your Daily Life

Writer's picture: Julia BarrosoJulia Barroso

How do you deal with scoliosis in your everyday life? I've always sought ways to improve my quality of life, so I want to share with you four tips that work well for me:

- Physical activity

I have always practiced sports and engaged in physical exercises, such as Pilates, but recently, I discovered weightlifting. If I had known how beneficial it would be for my body and back, I would have started earlier because the results are excellent. Of course, all of us with scoliosis should talk to our doctors to confirm if weightlifting is the best workout for that stage of life, as each case is unique.

- Postural care

We must always keep an eye on our posture, as it helps us a lot with scoliosis. Not that it improves the deviation, but it gives us a better feeling in the body, prevents back pain, and boosts our self-esteem. Some tips in this regard include:

  • Stretch regularly

  • Sit correctly in front of the computer (this is classic, but we struggle with it). The ideal is to fully support your back against the chair and keep both feet on the floor, without crossing your legs.

  • Avoid carrying a heavy bag or backpack on one shoulder

  • Be conscious of your posture throughout the day and correct the shoulder blades whenever possible.

  • Do not practice the "text neck" syndrome, using the cell phone and bending the neck downward. Position the device at eye level with your arms close to your body; the same applies to reading physical books.

- Psychological support

I wrote about the importance of psychotherapy for scoliosis patients in the post "How to deal with the emotions of scoliosis?". In it, I also provide more tips on how to deal with the emotions of scoliosis in everyday life. It's worth taking a look there!

- Medical treatment

We can't escape this topic. Seeking a doctor is essential to monitor scoliosis, as without it, there is a significant risk of the curve progressing and worsening significantly, causing various preventable problems. Tips on how to find a good specialist:

  • Ask for recommendations from friends and family

  • Ask for recommendations in scoliosis groups on Facebook

  • Call a hospital that specializes in scoliosis treatment and ask the staff for recommendations

  • Search on Google, always researching the doctor's professional history, resume, and reviews from other patients on the platform

Please share your tips for dealing with scoliosis with us here. Recommendations for good professionals in the field are also always very welcome!
