Four apps to manage scoliosis at home

Updated: Jan 8

Let's discuss technology and how it can help curved spine patients. We know that the daily life of those with this deformity is not easy, as there are many things to manage: brace, physical therapy, medical appointments, physical activity, and therapy, among other tasks. In addition, there is always the concern about whether the curves' degree increases or decreases during treatment. Thinking about all of this, tech geniuses decided to help us! So today, I bring you four tips for apps to manage scoliosis at home, available for download on smartphones.

BraceTrack

Created in 2019 by two American twins diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 12, this app helps patients manage their daily hours of orthopedic brace usage. Facing difficulties themselves, they researched the topic and came up with the idea of developing an app to assist others as well. Available in Brazil for both iOS and Android, the app has various features such as monitoring daily brace usage time, tracking accumulated hours, recording orthosis usage history, and generating reports with stored data to send to doctors or family members. Since it is free, it is highly worthwhile for those who wear braces and need an easier way to manage daily life with scoliosis.

Scoliometer

Developed by chiropractor and scoliosis specialist Kevin Lau, this app is a tool that aids doctors, healthcare professionals, and anyone wishing to manage scoliosis from home simply and quickly. It allows for digital measurement of curvature degrees using the Adams Forward Bend Test position. The Scoliometer is available for download on the App Store and Google Play, but it is not free.

ScolioTrack

Also created by Kevin Lau, the ScolioTrack app is not very different from the Scoliometer, as it also measures the degree of scoliosis. Available on both the App Store and Google Play, ScolioTrack also tracks height, and weight, and saves photographs of the patient's back, benefiting growing youths..

ScolioScreen

ScolioScreen can be accessed for free, using any internet browser. The idea behind this page is to promote scoliosis awareness and the importance of early detection. Through questions to the user, associated with illustrations, a screening is done to assess the risk of that person having scoliosis or not. Finally, the result appears with guidance to see a doctor as soon as possible if there is any risk of scoliosis. I found it very interesting!
